October 13, 2025

Hope you had some time this weekend to give thanks for all your blessings and spend time with family and friends.

We Scare Hunger Campaign

As you know, St. Cecilia is collecting non-perishable items for the Barrhaven Food Bank. This year, the Food Bank has communicated that they are very low on toiletries (e.g., soap, toothpaste, shampoo...) If you can, please send in some items for our collection. We will be counting these items each day. Children are learning to count them using tallies and to add by making friendly numbers (e.g. making 5's and 10's).

Language

We continue to work on learning sounds, building words using these sounds and writing short sentences using these words. We are all working on learning our vowel sounds more consistently. We will continue to learn 5 new Weekly words each week. The children are responsible for reading these words. We are practicing them at school. I know most of you have been practicing them at home. Please continue to practice letters and sounds until your child knows them. If you would like some tips, please write me a note.

Math

Children need to learn numbers to 50 in grade one. They can usually see patterns when they get to the numbers after 20. When the children see these patterns, their number sense begins to develop. For this reason, we work on numbers up to 100. There are lots of number patterns in numbers to 100. I will send home a  small 100 chart next week so you can practice finding numbers or patterns on it at home. It is so amazing when they notice a pattern independently ("I see that all the 3s are in one column"). I try to let them discover that on their own. A few friends have told me about some patterns already!

Skip counting

We have been counting by 1s, 10s and 5s at school. Some friends need extra practice. Explore using the 100 chart with your child or just practice with them orally. If your child is ready, have them practice counting by 2s, and maybe 25s.

I am looking forward to another great week of fun and more learning with the children. As always, please feel free to write me a note or call me at the school if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Giovanna Smith 😊
