Jungle Sport

We are so lucky at St. Cecilia to have Jungle Sport next week! Thank you for

filling out your child's permission forms. I am waiting for a couple more families.

Thank you to the School Council for paying for this awesome activity. All their

Fundraising and hard work allow these great opportunities for the children. Our

class will be going 2 different times next week : Tuesday, Jan. 27 and

Wednesday, Jan 28.

Skating days are coming soon!

Our first skating day is Monday, January 26. Please remember to send your

child’s skates in a separate bag. If you are able to tie up skates, please

meet us in the lobby at the Minto Rec Centre at 1:45. The children are

getting excited.

Language

We continue to learn new phonemes and the children are realizing that

letters and combinations of letters can sometimes make different

sounds. For example, "oo" can make the sound that we hear in “zoo” and

it also can make a different sound that is in the word “cool”. They are

also excited to find new words that follow the different rules we are

learning. Thank you for reading the books I sent home with your child.

I hope a few more come back this week so you can get new books to

 practice with at home too.

 Math

We continue to learn more about Geometry this week. We are working

on Number Talks: Which One Doesn't Belong? Students are learning to

share their thinking. This activity helps students communicate their

thinking orally to the larger group. The children will also learn to solve

some simple word problems. They are learning to explain their thinking

 with pictures, numbers and words.

Here are some more samples of this activity. You can try it at home

with your child. The question is “Which One Doesn’t Belong?". There are

Many responses that are correct. I am always so impressed with their

Thinking!

 Empty Kleenex boxes

Thank you to those who have sent in an empty kleenex box. If you

haven’t, please send one in for our valentine's day activity when you can.

Valentines on Valentine's Day - Feb 14

If you choose to have your child pass out valentines on February 13

(since the 14 is a Saturday), please include everyone in the class.

I will send out the class names for valentines this week.In grade 1,

I encourage each child to write their friends' names on

each card. It takes time but it is great practice. These can be made

or bought for about $2 for 30 at the dollar store, pharmacies or

even some grocery stores. It is always so fun for the children to

distribute their Valentines to their classmates :)

Extra socks and mitts

With the change in temperatures in this week's forecast, please

consider sending in a second pair of mittens or socks. If you are sending

in extra mittens and hats, please remember to label it all. I have a collection

of items in our room that no one recognizes :(

As always, write me a note or give me a call if you have any questions or

concerns. I look forward to another great week with the children.

Sincerely,

Giovanna Smith 😊
